Xabi Alonso, the Real Madrid midfielder, has refused the latest contract offer from Real Madrid sparking a flurry of transfer activity at the Anfield club.

Alonso, who will be 32 in November, left Liverpool for Real Madrid at the beginning of the 2009-10 season in a deal worth around £30m. He has excelled in his role as a multi-purpose midfielder for Real Madrid, with his extensive passing ability coming to the fore late in his career.

He has since won a number of cups and titles at the Bernebeu yet he has only recently been offered a new contract. That may have had something to do with the now departed Jose Mourinho who had some odd ideas about certain players at Real Madrid at the end of his tenure, especially the Spanish contingent.

Now that Real have offered him a contract extension, he has refused the offer, sparking a number of clubs to make enquiries as to his availability in January. The two main combatants are Liverpool and Juventus, with the former probably being his preferred destination if indeed he does leave Real Madrid next year.

Interestingly, Liverpool could have tried to sign Alonso this summer, but they were tipped off that he would refuse a new contract at Real Madrid because it now looks like his position has been taken by new signing Asmir Illarramendi from Real Sociedad. That means he will be able to leave for free next summer, a prospect which appeals to Liverpool who are still on a tight budget.

Real Madrid may try to offload  Alsonso to another Italian club, Fiorentina, who have also shown an interest, in the January transfer window in an attempt to get a fee from the deal, however, it will be up to the player to accept or refuse any offers now he is in his last year of contract.
