As with all friendly international previews I like to say I dont like to bet these in general, there are too many intangibles. The previews are to give you some insight into the teams and the pick is one for interest in the game.
England on paper have a team capable of competing at the World Cup in Brazil, with players of the calibre of Wayne Rooney, Stephen Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Oxlade Chamerlain, Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines, Joe Hart, Gary Cahill, there is no shortage of talent in this squad the question will be can Roy Hodgson get them to play as a unit and will they be able to work around their technical difficiencies when they come up against more technically gifted teams like Brazil, Spain and Argentina? The work for the World Cup will start here though a home game against Denmark the first of four friendlies before the World Cup game against Italy in June. This is areally strong squad of players, one of the best England have ever had going to a World Cup. Wayne Rooney will be the key for England and he has something to prove as he had a very disappointing Euro2012 and World Cup 2010. Its probably now or never for Rooney and the way he's been consistantly performing at a high level for Manchester United despite the team's struggles I am starting to think we are seeing a more professional and mature Rooney. Can he brings these qualities to the England set up? If he does, I think England just might have an outside chance.
Denmark are a team with a number of young players that are on teh verge of being World Class, Christian Erickson has shown signs of being just that and was a big money mover to Tottenham last season. Nicolas Bendtner is still Denmark's best player but has yet to convince at club level being little more than an Arsenal squad player the past few seasons. Martin Olson the Danish manager has his hands full in this job but given time there looks to be enough youth coming through (Erickson,Kvist, braitwaithe) and talent already within the ranks (Bendtner, Aggar) to make Denmark competitive at the very least in the nexy European championships. But this game against a talented England team may be a tad early for the Danes though.
I'm taking England to win here by two or more, so England -1 on the handicap. I like this English squad , I am impressed that Hodgson has gone with Baines, Lallana, Lambert and Rodriguez in the squad and I hope he continues to embrace the players playing well and not just sticking with the names. I do think the names will be the difference here with Rooney, Wellbeck, Gerrard the key to England going forward but I just like the balance Hodgson has in the squad. It will be interesting to see if these guys can produce a wuality performance as a unit though, a common failing of English teams down through the years. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
