El Classico, Real Madrid v Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu, need I say more?
There isnt much I can say about this game that hasnt already been written but here goes! Real Madrid sit atop the Spanish Primera Division and they paly host to great rivals Barcelona this weekend. we are privileged to be able to seeCristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi go head to head so often. The equivalent would have been, being able to see Pele in his prime take on Maradona. It never happened and we, this generation of soccer fans, should thank our lucky stars that we get to see two of the greatest players ever go face to face so often. Of late Cristiano Ronaldo has been getting the better of both Messi and Barcelona at the moment it would appear as if the Portugese superstar is unstoppable. But that is in large part thanks to Ancelotti and the Real Madrid board room who went out and spent eighty odd million on Gareth Bale. Bale has been a large part of Ronaldo's unstoppableness as the Welsh wizard demands his own fine attention from defences and that gives Ronaldo enough space to be as exceptional as he is. How will Barcelona deal with this deadly duo?
Lionel Messi on the other hand has been handed a showpony as his assistant in Neymar. While pretty to watch and the scorer of the occasional brilliant goal Neymar has been less effective than his Madrid counterpart. Neymar has seven goals and eight assists so far this season with Bale on ten goals and twelve assists. The rest of the Barcelona midfield has also aged another year and Xavi has been less productive this season and held less influence on the games in general. Fabregas , Iniesta and Sanchez though have abily assisted and covered for when Messi was absent(inparticular Sanchez who has seventeen goals) but as a whole it would appear that Barcelona just dont seem to be as well balance as this Madrid side.
Real Madrid's re emergence this season while definitely heavily reliant on Ronaldo's individual brilliance has also been based on the solidity of their defence. Carlo Ancelotti has brought a steely resiliance to Madrid's backline. Brilliantly led by Sergio Ramos and Pepe Madrid will give very little space to Messi on Sunday and there is no doubt the little argentine will receive a couple of heavy tackles throughout the game. I think Barcelona will look to get a win on Sunday and their willingness to attack may lead to serious reprecussions on the counter from this Real Madrid side. I am going to take Real Madrid to get a win here and all but knock Barcelona out of the title race. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
