One of the best games of the Quarter final see's FC Basel host Valencia in the first leg, in St Jacob-Park Basel. Basel come into this game in terrific form being unbeaten in their last fifteen games in all competitions. Hakan Yakan's side were underdogs in the last round facing free scoring Red Bull Salzburg but they produced a terrific performance away in Austria to come away with a win and qualify for the quarter finals. Basel have pedigree and with quality players such as Sio, Strellar and Frei it would not be a big surprise to see this squad go all the way in the competition. Basel's strength in defence seen them prevail twice against Chelsea in the Champions League group stages and the defence will be relied upon again if Basel are to turn over Valencia.
Valencia come into this game having had a rough run in the Primera Division losing two of their last five and suffering a bad loss at home to Getafe on Sunday after leading 1-0 early in the game. Manager Pizzi will look to Vargas, Jonas up front as the two have combined for eleven goals this season. Valencia have struggled away from home this season and a trip to Basel is probably not going to be easy, considering that Basel havent lost a competitive home game since October and have only lost one game all season domestically.
I like Basel here, I also like the unders. Basel play a containing type of tactics that often leads to low scoring games. The first leg of their last sixteen was a prime example where they contained Red Bull's high powered offence and the game finished 0-0. In their European games this season four of the five home games Basel played have gone under the 2.5 goal mark so with that in mind I am taking the unders in this game. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
