There are many questions that need answering before we can truly pick a winner of the Copa Del Rey final. Can Real Madrid stiffle Messi just as their near neighbours Athletico Madrid managed in the two legs of the Champions League quarter final. Will Cristiano Ronaldo be risked in the game with the semi final of the Champions League coming up next week? Real Madrid come into this game with the most obvious question marks and they all surround their star man Cristiano Ronaldo. When Ronaldo plays Real Madrid are a much better side and while they have won their league games in his absence they succumbed to Borussia Dortmund in the second leg without mustering much opposition. It is against the good teams that Real really miss Ronaldo and the opponents wont come much tougher than Barcelona their age old rivals. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has a tough decision to make on the participation of Ronaldo, Ronaldo will want to play, he always does but Ancelotti has to consider the consequences should Ronaldo play and aggrevate the injury he would more than likely miss the Champions League Semi final which is Real Madrid's true target this year. Ancelotti has alot of attacking talent at his disposal with Bale, Benzema, Di Maria, Moratta there is more than enough talent to allow Ancelotti to rest his star man. The key to Real's game will be containing Messi so alot of responsability will fall on Xabi Alonso in the midfield to close down Xavi and Iniesta, Alonso has been up to the challenge in most of the games he's faced Barcelona so Wedensday night will be an interesting game.
For Barcelona WEdnesday night's game against Real Madrid represents their last chance of silverware this season and gives them an opportunity to deny Real Madrid of a trophy. Barca are not in the best of form though coming into the game after back to back losses both 1-0, both away from home. Barcelona had 78% possession against Granada at the weekend out shot their opponents 22 to 3 but could not find the net. Lionel Messi has looked a little off lately but Wednesday night might represent the perfect energiser as Messi seems to be alway at his best in the big games and domestically they dont come any bigger than Real Madrid. Messi scored a hatrick in the league fixture between the two clubs a few weeks back, the first time a Barcelona player had scored a hat trick in the Bernebeau. Lionel Messi is the key for Barcelona if the Argentine maestro is on his game Barcelona always have a chance. Its been a tough season for Neymar to adjust, the Brazilian is more famous for his diving that his footballing contributions but there is no doubting that he has talent. Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets will be looking to release Messi , Fabregas and Neymar and if Ronaldo does not play then Barcelona will have more freedom in the midfield to create chances.
As a game its tough to pick a winner, my opinion would also change if word filtered through of a fit Cristiano Ronaldo starting. But either way I think this game will have goals. It is true that Barcelona have struggled to find the net in recent weeks but that was when facing teams that were prepared to sit back and defend. Real Madrid may soak up some pressure but they will come out and attack fast on the counter. I like the overs here, I think Messi will shine especially if Ronaldo is missing but either way I see there being a few goals. Take the overs here and follow me on twitter@antonpippo
