Alot of things have been written about Bayern Munich and their in ability to break down a resolute Real Madrid in the first leg of this Champions League semi final. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola played an unorthodox formation with possibly the worlds best right back Philip Lahm playing in midfield and Rafinha facing the worlds best player Cristiano Ronaldo. Mostly the tactic did not work as Rafinha was replaced in the sixtieth minute by an othodox midfielder and Lahm went to right back. Sometimes it can be said that Guardiola overthinks the tactics, with such a talented group of players at his disposal he could do worse than just go with an orthodox 4-3-3 and play his players in their best positions. But then I'm not a two time Champions League winning manager so what do I know! The one thing that wont be missing on Tuesday night though is effort from this group as Bayern have been terrific for the last four or five seasons. Ribery, Robben will be the key to breaking down Real and Schweinsteiger and Kroos in the center of midfield must play a disciplined game to try to prevent Ronaldo , Di Maria and Bale having too much freedom on the counter attack.
Real Madrid come into this game on the back of a 4-0 win at home, Cristiano Ronaldo has another game under his belt and scored two goals at the weekend. Real Madrid's star man was only back in the line up for the first time against Munich and did look a little bit off his game and not match sharp. Gareth Bale also missed the majority of the first game through having a flu. With Bale and Ronaldo both in the starting line up on Tuesday night, Real will be far more potent on the counter attack. Carlo Ancelotti's side put in a terrific defensive display in the first leg with Pepe, Ramos and Casillas brilliant in the first leg. Personally I think Madrid will have to score to go through but with Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema in the side I think there is every chance of that tomorrow night.
This game didnt live up to the billing in the first leg, what promised to be an open attacking game of football became a highly tactical game with Madrid stiffling Bayern for long periods and Bayern struggling to break through. I think Tuesday's game is hard to predict an early goal for Madrid could lead to similar tactics from the Spanish side but an early goal for Bayern would have the opposite effect. I like Real Madrid's chances of scoring tomorrow night though and I am going to take both teams to score as my tip. This one should be entertaining and it will be riveting watching Bale and Ronaldo against Ribery and Robben! Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
