Ecuador and Switzerland will meet in the 2014 World Cup on Sunday afternoon. It’s the first ever meeting between the two.
Switzerland is no stranger to the World Cup, as this is their 10th appearance in the event. However, they haven’t experienced any major success since reaching the quarterfinals in 1954. Switzerland enters this tournament with a fairly young team that’s eager to prove itself. In fact, Switzerland is so young that it is going to rely heavily on 22-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri to lead the way. Shaqiri, who has spent his last two seasons playing for Bayern Munich, is one of the fastest players in the tournament and could cause matchup problems. You have to worry above nerves with Switzerland, as they blew a 4-1 game against Iceland and do have a well-known hot head in Valon Behrami on the team as well.

Ecuador isn’t nearly as experienced in in the World Cup, as this is just their third appearance, but all three have come since 2002. Ecuador has made some noise leading up to this match by settling for a draw against England in its most recent pre-cup match and defeating Uruguay earlier. However, the team did experience a crushing blow with the suspension of Antonio Valencia. With Valencia out, Ecuador will now turn to Michael Arroyo, who spent his last season playing for C.F. Atlante. Ecuador also has an experienced player in Walter Ayoví, who scored three World Cup goals during qualification matches back in 2010. Ecuador has shown it can compete with some of the best and is certainly going to be no pushover.
This may end up being one of the better matches in the group stages. But with everything said and done, Switzerland is a little too athletic and has a little more firepower offensively.
I like Switzerland to get the victory in the second half.
