Honduras and France will kick off their 2014 World Cup experience on Sunday afternoon. This is the first ever meeting between the two.
France is one of the more respected teams in the tournament with this being their 14th appearance in the World Cup and given the fact they won it in 1998 and finished runner-up in 2006. However, France is going to desperately miss Franck Ribéry, who is out of the tournament with a back injury. Ribéry brought leadership to the team and somebody who scored five World Cup qualification goals. France is still a respectable opponent without him on the field but will need to ask more of Karim Benzema, who has scored no less than 20 goals in his last four seasons with Real Madrid.

This is Honduras’ second straight qualification and third all-time. Arnold Peralta won’t participate due to a thigh injury, which really hurts a Honduras team that struggled to score as it is. Honduras has to play terrific defense to have a chance this year, as they lack a quality striker. I mean, we’re talking about a team that was shutout against Turkey in a pre-cup match. Honduras does have two solid defenders in Emilio Izaguirre and Roger Espinoza. Along with goalie Noel Valladares, Honduras has the defensive pieces to keep games close and possibly steal a game in this tournament.
It’s important to note that Honduras has never won a World Cup match and has never made it out of the group stage. It’s tough to imagine that’s going to change against a more talented squad in France. France packs more of a punch offensively and may only need one goal in this match to come away with the victory.
While there’s absolutely no value in picking France to win, I’ll go ahead and take my chances against the spread to get a little more bang for our buck.
