Is this really the group of death with Germany, Portugal , Ghana and the USA? While the US and Ghana are good team in their own right surely Portugal and Germany are at a different level and should both be looking to get out of this group at a minimum. Germany come in with a really stron squad one of the best in the tournament and hence the reason they are thrid favourites for the competition. Joachim Lowe's side are solid defensivley , have an outstanding talented midfield and the one weakness may just be up front where Miroslav Klose is still a key figure off the bench but Thomas Muller will be the main man. While Muller isa fine player he has been unable to nail down a starter spot with Bayern Munich and he may struggle here with the weight of expectation. With Ozil, Podolski, Goetze, Schweinsteiger, Kroos there is some serious attacking talent in this German squad and the Germans will fancy their chances of going all the way.
Portugal's world cup hopes revolve around number 7, Cristiano Ronaldo. If Ronaldo is fit then he is almost unplayable. The former Manchester United and current Real Madird superstar scored four goals in the World Cup playoff win over Sweden, including a hat trick in Sweden, to get the Portugese to the finals. Now that they are here they will want to kick off and go on a deep run but first they must negotiate this tricky opener with Germany. With Pepe, Contrau, Mountinho and Postiga there are players with experience of playing at the top level but to beat Germany the Portugese will have to be patient and disciplined.

A tough ask here for Portugal but I think they can get something here. The Portugese were very good at Euro 2012 going out to Spain in the semi final on penalties. I think that they are poised for another deep here at this tournament and they can get it off to a good start with a point in the opener against Germany. I am going to take Portugal +1 on the handicap, worst case scenario I think Germany win by one and we get a push. But i'm actually expecting this one to finish a draw. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
