Spain and Chile will meet Wednesday afternoon in an intriguing 2014 World Cup matchup.
Spain needs this victory or there’s no chance of advancing to the next round, as it suffered its most humiliating loss in over 50 years, losing to the Netherlands, 5-1. Although Spain won the World Cup in 2010, we’re really going to find out what this team is made off after being embarrassed in its opening match. While nothing is certain, you have to believe that the defending champs come out with a lot more energy and force a more competitive match. Coach Vicente del Bosque said that his players a little more upbeat and have come to terms with the loss. I get the feeling this is the match where Diego Costa has his coming out party.

After a solid, 3-1, win over Australia, Chile is a win away from advancing to the round of 16 for the second straight time. Chile got off to a fast start, but seemed a little too passive in the later stages of the match. It must develop more of a killer instinct if it’s going to have any chance to put a team away such as Spain. Jorge Sampaoli talked about it after the win and admitted that his team must put together more complete matches against the tougher competition. Still, a win is a win and Chile is certainly stiffer competition than the Netherlands. Look for Alexis Sánchez to have a big game if Chile has any chance.
Due to the blowout loss, we’re getting a somewhat surprisingly low line on Spain. A draw isn’t good enough, Spain needs the win in order to have any chance of advancing. Due to them being the better team from top to bottom and the defending champs, it’s tough to bet against them.
A humbling loss can sometimes be a good thing, and you have to expect Spain to bounce back in a big way.
