Colombia impressively put Greece to the sword in the opening game of Group C, James Rodriguez was the star man but he floated in and out of the game and was allowed to do so because Greece really struggled. This will be a much tougher test and the Ivory Coast midfield of Tiote and Ya Ya Toure will be alot tougher on Rodriguez, he wont get anything like the space he got against Greece. The Colombians kind of just did what they had to in the opening game and after scoring early they drifted through the rest of the first half. With a solid defence marshalled by Yepes and Zapata and a star studded midfield including Rodriguez the questions for this Colombian team is will Guiterrez or Jackson Martinez be able to score the goals to go on a deep run. How Colombia must wish Ramadal Falcao was in the squad right now but unfortunately the Monaco striker is injured.
The Ivory Coast came from behind to beat Japan in their opening game. Ya Ya Toure was the Ivory Coast most impressive player, the Manchester City midfielder ran the show from midfield but watched helplessly as Bony, Gervinho and Kalou conspired to miss every chance created. Didier Drogba came on as a second half sub and things seemed to change almost instantly with the Ivory Coast netting twice in the next five minutes. Drogba is an almost mythical figure, his ability to hold up the ball and play the right pass will be vital if the Ivory Coast are going to be in the shake up. His role will most certainly be as a super sub a he just doesnt have the legs for 90 minutes but he can be a big impact player in this tournament.
Colombia are good, how good? Its hard to know Greece appeared to be awful in the opening game and therefore Colombia's win is hard to judge. The Ivory Coast are also very good and Japan looked a decent side that will give anyone a game on their day. I just dont think there is that much between these two teams and therefore am going to take the handicap here. I think the Ivory Coast could well win this outright but I will take the one goal head start in a game that I feel should be a coinflip. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
