Switzerland and France square off in a pivotal show down of first round victors as the winner here will advance to the knockout stage.
Switzerland was a tough team to figure out heading into the World Cup Finals as they were seeded eighth in the world coming in but a lackluster qualifying had skeptics pointing out their flaws in a group that would see them as runners up at best. The Swiss continued their lack of identity in their first group stage game against Ecuador as they conceded the first goal before rallying for two straight including the game winner in stoppage time of the second half but now they face much stiffer competition. The Swiss have been considered world dark horses for years now especially after knocking off Spain in their first contest of World Cup 2010 but now they have much larger expectations on their shoulders and in a contest against another world power it’ll be interesting to see how they react.

France was considered by many to not only coast through the group stage but to challenge in the knockout stage as well and even though they are without one of their best in Franck Ribery they looked very strong in a winning effort in their tournament opener. The French took down a shorthanded Honduran squad by a 3-0 final but things could have been much worse as Les Bleus hit two crossbars and missed a handful of other opportunities before ultimately slowing the pace down and running out the clock. Karim Benzema netted two goals for the victors and perhaps deserved a third that was credited as an own goal but he wasn’t the only French player making a difference as the likes of Debuchy, Pogba, Valbuena, and Matuidi all played quite well and net minder Huge Lloris was there when he needed to be. There is a reason why the French were considered the favourite to advance out of this group and that is simply because they’re the best of the four sides and I think they demonstrate that here against an overrated Swiss team at a nice price.
