The United States and Portugal square off in a pivotal group match on Sunday as both teams look to inch closer to the knockout stage.
The United States pulled off a special victory in their tournament opener against a very solid Ghana team and they weren’t short on fireworks as they netted the game winner in the dying moments of the match just minutes after conceding the equalizer. With the victory, the US have put themselves in a pretty good position to advance to the knockout stage but with their final two group game against Portugal and Germany they know they have their work cut out for them especially here today against a Portuguese side that was abysmal in their tournament opener and will be playing for their tournament lives. The Americans will be without play making striker Jozy Altidore who is out with an injured hamstring so they will be leaning heavily on Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley to carry them to victory which is by no means a bad thing.

Portugal were trounced in their tournament opener by a superior German side that put up four goals while Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to create plays and defender Pepe was sent off with a red card for head butting. The Portuguese are in desperation mode heading into this contest and know full well that if they don’t get three points their tournament is likely over and for a nation that has monumental expectations every time they touch the pitch, being eliminated before their final group stage game would clearly be a massive disappointment. With Pepe out for this game as well I think the Portuguese back end will suffer and while the Americans as mentioned are without Altidore I think they have enough of a supporting cast to get the job done and I think they could very well crush Portuguese hearts. Portugal barely got into this World Cup and I think we see an overhaul of sorts after the World Cup but at this price I think the US is well worth a shot.
