Ivory Coast face a must win against Greece on Tuesday as both teams look to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup.
Greece have just a single point through two contests of the World Cup group stage and to be quite honest I think they were extremely lucky to even have that as Japan badly outplayed them and should very well have taken the three points. However, with that being said Greece is still very much alive in this tournament and while their chances at advancing to the knockout stage are slim they are in much better shape than some teams. Greece claimed the 2004 Euro Cup with a Cinderella run led by a stingy defense and opportune scoring but since then they haven’t been able to replicate that success despite attempts to follow the same blue print. Greece need a victory first and foremost but also need Colombia to defeat Japan or hold them to a draw which seems plausible but could be a tough out against a desperate Japanese side so all things considered it could be a tough day for the Greeks.

Ivory Coast dominated their matchup against Colombia but their back end and goaltending which have been called into question since the tournament started was the scapegoat in a 2-1 loss that has hampered the African side’s chances of advancing. Ivory Coast was my pre-tournament pick to advance as winners of this group despite their question marks at the back as they have so much raw talent up front and are ridiculously athletic and they have a pedigree of success as a number of key players on their squad have won at the highest level of club football. Didier Drogba is gearing towards the end of his international reign but he is still a difference maker and many times is the best player on the field and with a supporting cast of Yaya Toure and Gervinho it is hard to fathom this team not making the round of 16. However, Greece are a side that are very opportunistic and in a desperation game against a soft back end they could very well pull off the unthinkable. Either way I think we see some goals in this one despite Greece’s defensive style as both teams will have a high sense of urgency and will need goals in their favour.
