Uruguay and Italy will meet Tuesday afternoon in a crucial World Cup match that will determine both teams’ fate.
Uruguay bounced back from its loss to Costa Rica with a 2-1 upsetting win over England. Despite controlling the ball only 38 percent of the time, Uruguay managed to get six shots on goal and found the net twice to stay alive in this tournament. Luis Suárez scored both goals for Uruguay and will need another big performance if they can continue to make a push for the next round. Uruguay’s lack of defensive pressure has to be concerning in this match considering Italy is just as skilled as England was. Uruguay can’t allow the Italians to have the ball majority of the match if they hope to win.

Italy looked sharp in its win over England, but was shutout in its 1-0 loss to Costa Rica. Despite having the ball 58 percent of the match and matching Costa Rica’s 10 shots, Italy was offsides 11 times and couldn’t find the net once all game. At times Italy looked lifeless and frustrated, simply not the same aggressive team we saw in the opening matchup. It’s no secret that Italy is going to need a strong performance from its two superstars Andrea Pirlo and Mario Balotelli in this match. Italy will have to come out with more energy from the start and set the tone in order to advance.
If England was able to play keep away from Uruguay, I can only imagine what type of performance the Italians are capable of. Italy is more skilled than England and has the playmakers who can put the ball in the net. I expect to see a more aggressive Italian team and think they have what it takes to get the W in this crucial matchup.
The odds have Italy has the slight underdog, but I like those chances.
