The United States look to cement their place in the Round of 16 as they take on the world powers from Germany in their final game of the group stage.
The United States were the focus of a ton of controversy heading into this World Cup surrounding the exclusion of long time captain Landon Donovan and the result of the American team at this World Cup are going to come back to that story line regardless. However, the Americans have four points through two games and probably should have six as they were well on their way to taking all three from Portugal before a last second header tied things up but then again I think the US was lucky to escape Ghana with a victory. The Americans certainly have the support from a nation usually that shies away from the Beautiful Game but on the biggest stage it seems like everyone is showing their support for the red, white, and blue and hopefully for their sake they’ll salvage at least a draw against the mighty Germans. The US can advance with a tie or a win here and even if they lose they can still advance based on the result of the Ghana-Portugal game but they would like to control their own fate and a strong effort here will do that.

Germany have to be a little upset with the way they played against Ghana in their second tournament game as they drew to a 2-2 final with the African side but to be honest I don’t think there is any shame in that as Ghana are a very sound team. Germany was expected to head the group with three victories but you have to give the other sides credit as this is certainly a Group of Death and to fathom two of Germany, Portugal, Ghana, and the United States going home after the group stage is hard to believe. To me, Germany are still the favourites to win the whole tournament and I know the whole logic of European sides in South America not performing well but I think top to bottom this is the best team in the tournament and while they can advance to the round of 16 with a draw I don’t think that’s the way the Germans want to head into the next round. I expect a bounce back effort from the Germans and I think they get the win leaving the Ghana-Portugal result of utmost importance.
