Portugal have been far from impressive thus far, a disaster agains Germany was followed by a poor display against the United States, one they deserved to lose only for Ronaldo to play an inch perfect pass in the 95th minute for Varela to nod in the equaliser. Because of the 4-0 loss to Germany in the opening game Portugal need to win here and need to win by two or three to give themselves a chance of progressing. Cristiano Ronaldo just does not look fit right now and without his brilliance up front Portugal just do not seem as dangerous. Part of the problem for Portugal is that they hold the ball too long in midfield, Mouthino, Veloso and Meireles do not realease the ball quick enough for when Ronaldo makes the run and therefore they are not finding him in time. In both of the games Portugal have had to replace their center forward within a half hour through injury and Eder the last fit available center forward does not look up to it. Portugals hopes are going to rely on the unreliable Nani and the brilliant but obviously injured Ronaldo. Can they produce some magic?
Ghana were terrific against Germany, they really took the game to the Germans and after going 1-0 down they stormed back to lead 2-1 and should have won the game but they just could not convert the chances they created. Again Ayew and Gyan up front were a handful and the hard working Muntari and Asamoah led by example through the middle. But Muntari will miss this game through suspension. Ghana really gave Germany a terrific game in what was the best second half of the tournament. The pace and athelticism that Ghana have shown in both games so far makes me feel like they can get a win against Portugal.

Before the tournament started I really believed that Portugal could go well here, I felt like they could win this Group but that was with a fit Cristiano Ronaldo and a full squad, Portugal are missing Contreau, Almeida and Postiga through injury and really I am not sure why Portugal are favourites here.Ghana have just looked better. I do think Muntari missing will hurt Ghana and his replacement Essien may also miss the game through injury. But with goals a necessity for Portugal and Ghana looking unable to defend I am going to take the overs in the game. A small bet on Ghana outright may pay dividends for those looking for value.
