France look to prove their group stage dominance wasn’t a fluke as they take on Nigeria for a spot in the quarter finals.
France were one of the most intriguing sides heading into World Cup 2014 after a disastrous campaign in 2010 left a ton of question marks for a team in transition and while things greatly improved at Euro 2012 this has been a renaissance for the French who looked like world beaters in the group stage. France coasted through their group with convincing wins over Honduras and Switzerland and a meaningless draw against Ecuador but now things matter most and they take on an athletic Nigerian side that emerged out of their group behind Argentina. France is led up front by Olivier Giroud and Karim Benzema who account for one of the best striking tandems in this World Cup and if they can continue their strong ball handling and counter attack against Nigeria they shouldn’t have much trouble advancing to the final eight against the winner of Switzerland and Argentina.

Nigeria finished as the runners up in their group behind an overachieving Argentina side that needed a last second goal from Messi to beat Iran and looked lackluster in their win against Bosnia so it’ll be interesting to see how this Nigerian side matches up against a team who has played well so far. Nigeria are one of two African sides to advance to the knockout stage and of the two they probably stand a better chance at making it through as the Algerians take on a German side who looks poised to go on a deep run. Nigeria are very quick and can change the pace of a game at a moment’s notice but they’ll have to play their best game of the tournament to date as France are a very solid side that have all the pieces to advance through this game and possibly into the semifinals. This line continues to move in favour of the French and rightfully so and while I do think France will win I think it’ll be another case of a high scoring affair. The value here resides with the over as I think we will see a 3-2 type final for Les Bleus.
