Belgium managed to win all three Group games without being overly impressive, in a Group that really was not very good the Belgians struggled to find the net. Lukaku has yet to score and eighteen year old Daniel Origi looks like he might be the the better option for Marc Wilmots as the Belgians just have not been very clinical in front of goal. There is alot of talent in this Belgian squad though with Chelsea's Eden Hazrd, Thibaut Courtois and Kevin De Byrune three of a group of talented youngsters leading the way for the Belgians. WIth Manchester United's Marouanne Fellaini looking more like a the player he was at Everton than the player that ambled around Old Trafford last season the Belgians have a real tough look about them and they will be hard to beat with Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany patrolling the back four. But with all that said Belgium are yet to be tested and they havent played against a really good side until now.
The United States should have wrapped up qualification after two games having led Portugal until the fifth monute of injury time but that late equaliser meant that the qualification was not wrapped up and they left their fans in for a nervous last ninty against Germany where the US lost but still advanced on Superior goal difference from Portugal. Lucky one could say but not really. Over the three games the United States deserved to advance and advance they did so congratulations need to go to Jurgen Klinsmann who has done a terrific job. I questioned why he didnt take Donovan before the tournament and just couldnt see where the goals would come from but Clint Dempsey has provided that answer, he will score em all, or damn near em all! The loss of Altidore early in the frist game was a blow but he is available for selection and should be a nice option to bring in from the bench. The United States have shown a couple of things to the US public, soccer is all heart, every time those players pull on their jerseys they give everything they have representing their nation and there is nothing like that to inspire a viewing public.

The so called group of death did the US no harm, it inspired a nation and playing against the best got the best viewership a World Cup has ever gotten in the United States, it also gave the US a huge following internationally from countries who's own nations did not make it. The United States are again underdogs going in against a team that is technically better, has better players on paper and deeper squad well on paper anyway, but thats the tyoe of thing this US team has taken in its stride. I'm taking the US on the handicap +1 at evens, yes please. I really believe the US can win this game outright, it may take extra time and penalties but I think the US makes it to the quarters. As a side note I think I should mention that I have been cheering on the US from the start of the tournament as my own nation Ireland , failed in qualification. Bandwagon jumper I may be but its been fun and I think I get one more night out from this team of upstarts!
