Arsenal and Besiktas will clash Wednesday evening at Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Champions League. This is the second time these two teams have met in the past week, as their earlier match in Istanbul resulted in a 0-0 draw.
Although Arsenal heads into this matchup as the overwhelming favorite, it will be shorthanded with the suspension of Aaron Ramsey, who received the first red card of his career in his last match. As if that wasn’t enough, Arsenal will also be without Mikel Arteta and possibly Olivier Giroud due to ankle injuries. That’s a lot of firepower to replace, especially considering Ramsey already has three goals, picking up where he left off last season with 16 goals. Alexis Sanchez could see more playing time for Arsenal due to the suspensions and injuries, but Arsene Wenger did admit that he isn’t in the best of shape heading into this matchup. Arsenal is a bit of a trainwreck right now and it’ll be interesting to see how it counters all of these incidents.

Unlike Arsenal, Besiktas has no major injuries and should get a major boost with a confident Demba Ba in the lineup, who nearly scored in the previous match between these two teams. In the first match between these two teams, Besiktas looked like the more disciplined team but had to pick its spots due to the explosiveness that Arsenal possesses. For example, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nearly ended the match with a goal in the final minutes. Besiktas will have its chances with an undermanned Arsenal team, but would be better off playing a conservative style of play and playing not to lose rather than going for the quick strikes and an up-tempo style.
Besiktas has had success in England, beating Chelsea and Manchester United years ago. However, Arsenal has not lost to a Turkish team at home and is the heavy favorite for a reason.
With everything said and done, I see there being more value in another draw between these teams. I just can’t lay the juice with an Arsenal squad that’s banged up, and I don’t have the confidence in Besiktas winning straight up.
