Southampton look to end a run of five straight defeats when they host Everton at St Marys. The Saints have had a horrific run of form of late losing five straight including going out of the quarterfinals of the league cup on Wednesday to League one side Sheffield United. The problem for the Saints has been scoring goals they have lost four of the five games without finding the net and have spurned glorious chances in alot of those games. After a hot start Pelle has gone off the boil and strike partner Shane Long has yet to really find his goalscoring boots since transfering to the south coast. Southampton still have a strong team and will be tough to beat as Ronald Koeman has assembled a good squad with a strong defence, the return of morgan sneiderlein to the midfield will also help, he returned on Wednesday and played the full game.
Everton come into this one off the back of a comfortable home victory over QPR. The toffees are back in the top half after struggling in recent weeks but will be relishing the chance to take on Southampton especially considering their hosts struggles of late. Roberto Martinez has alot of fire power in the form of Lukaku, Naismith, Eto and Mirallas. Everton have a nice run of games coming up that could leave them high up the table but they will look to get a win here first. Everton have lost three of their last five games in all competitions though and Roberto Martinez will know his side need to build some momentum to compete with West Ham, Newcastle,Arsenal, Tottenham, Southampton and Liverpool for that fourth Champions League spot. This is an open year but Everton know the importanc of these Christmas fixtures a win here could be worth more than just three points with momentum going into a fixture list that includes three games in a week.
Two teams that look really well matched on paper. Southampton thouh are in a horrific run of form and just can not score, they face an Everton team that have started to look like themselves again after a few weeks of struggling. I think Southampton stop the rot here and get something from this home game, the return of Sneiderlein is big for the Saints and Pelle & Long are due a bit of luck in front of goal. Against the formbook I am going to take Southampton to get the win here.
