The New Year kicks off for the Premier League from the Britannia Stadium where Stoke City will take on Manchester United. Stoke come into this game having won two in a row after a home loss to Chelsea. The Potters have been impressive at times under Mark Hughes and they have an away win at Manchester City, the only team in the league to do so this term. With Peter Crouch, Mama Diof and jonathon Walters up front Stoke have a good mix and with Bojan playing in behind this is a good Stoke team and the home crowd will be well up for this game. There was a terrific atmosphere for the visit of Chelsea and the fans were just as enthusiastic for the game against West Brom on Sunday. This is a big game for Stoke and one that the team should put in a big performace.
When Louis Van Gaal looks back at the game tape of the Tottenham match he will wonder how on earth his Manchester United team did not score at least three goals in the first half. The reality is that it was a mixture of brilliant goalkeeping by Lloris and awful finishing. But with Falcao, Rooney and RVP there is no doubt that the goals will come. This is a really good Manchester United team, it took a couple of months for them to click but they are now on form and that is without Angel Di Maria who is one of the best players in the world. United though still look a little soft at the back and Stoke City will test them from set pieces with their physical defenders and crouch.
I took the overs in the United v Spurs game and couldnt believe when it finished 0-0, I was genuinely shocked. I cant see that happening again on New Years day though and I think both teams will be looking to win this one. I am taking the overs as I think United will make up for their shocking finishing against Tottenham but I also think Stoke will get on the scoresheet as they are very good from set pieces and United defensively look soft from free kicks and corners. I will have a free pick on the winning side on the Sportschatplace app.
