The tie of the round in the Copa Del Rey will see Atletico Madrid play host to Real Madrid in Wednesday night's first round clash. Atletico have already bolstered their squad in January with the arrival of Fernando Torres from Milan, the prodigal son has returned and what a game for him to return in. The Vincent Cauldron stadium will be electric with the potential debut of Torres for his boyhood club against their cross city rivals. Atletico Manager Diego Simeone has had terrific success against Real Madrid over the last couple of season losing only once and that was in Extra Time of the Champions League final. With a great defence and a solid midfield Atletico have resumed thier defence of La Liga in impressive fashion closing the gap on Real Madrid to one point. With Greizmann, Mandzukich and now Torres there is plenty of attacking firepower here and Atletico will fancy their chances of upsetting the reigning champions over the two legs.
Real Madrid came back off the winter break flat and when faced with a tough away task at Valencia they faltered. Losing the game 2-1 after leading 1-0. That man Ronaldo scored again from the penalty pot but overall the game was not one of his best. With Bale, Jesse, Isco, Benzema and Ronaldo there is a ridiculous amount of attacking talent here although this is a derby game and the last few times Atletico have marshalled Ronaldo well and held Real Madrid to one goal or fewer in the last foru meetings between the sides. Carlo Ancelotti looks likely to put out his full team here but this is a tough ask for his side especially considering their struggles against Valencia at the weekend.
I like Atletico Madrid on the handicap here for a number of reasons, Torres is back and likely to play at some stage coming in from the bench the emotonal rollercoaster that this could cause for the fans will be close to hysteria. This will be played over two legs so a draw is not a horrible result for Real Madrid and therefore they may not go all out for the win. I will spread a little on Atletico to win outright as special players are often involved in special games and if Torres was to score a late winner here would anyone really be surprised?
