Aston Villa take on Liverpool at Villa Park with the home side just five points off bottom of the league table but they are actually in twelfth poistion. It is getting very tight in the bottom half as team's are starting to fight for their lives and Villa boss Paul Lambert will know his side are in danger of falling into that relegation battle unless they start winning a few games and pull away. Christian Benteke is the key man for Villa as the Belgian striker has the physical presence and ability to change games. The problems for Villa though do revolve around their lack of goals with the team only scoring once in their last five games. Lambert has one of the best defences in the league but they do need a hand from their midfield and strikers.Villa have only conceded twenty three goals which is the best defence in the league outside the top four.
While Liverpool are in the midst of a seven game unbeaten run but that run is somewhat underpinned by the soft schedule they have played taking three of the bottom six teams and two lower division teams in the FA Cup and League Cup. There is no doubt that has been a slight improvement in Brendan Rodgers side's fortunes but I am not sure they have improved significantly to be 4/5 favourites here against a Villa team that dont concede much and that are unbeaten at home in their last six. WIth injuries stiill playing a big part of the problem for Liverpool it looks likely Borini and Markovich will start. Markovich was the match winner last time out against Sunderland and played well. Whether he is good enough to make a significant impact on Liverpool it remains to be seen.
I like the home dog here. Aston Villa have proven to be really tough to beat at home this season and getting a goal head start seems the smart play here. I am taking Villa +1 in a game that the underdogs could well sneak. Remember Villa did beat Liverpool 1-0 in Anfield earlier in the season.
