Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich will look to bounce back from a shock defeat to Wolfsburg last friday when they host Schalke on Tuesday night in the Allianz Arena. The champions were noticeably rusty when they took on Wolfsburg after the winter break and Guardiola's side suffered their first league defeat of the season against second placed Wolfsburg. They now return home to take on a fourth placed Schalke team who have improved dramatically over the last two months and who are up enjoying a renaissance under Roberto Di Mateo. Bayern have a tremendous squad though and even while missing Lahm, Ribery, Rafinha they have more than adequate replacements. Lewandowski, Robben and Muller will look for more joy at home than they had against Wolfsburg. While I was expecting a little drop off from Bayern the performance by Wolfsburg on Friday was encouraging for the rest of the Bundesliga. It proved that Bayern are beatable.
Schalke are one of those teams that generally raises their game against the bigger teams and Roberto Di Mateo will not have to motivate his men for this one as they will be up for it from the start. But with a number of key men missing this is going to be a tough ask for Schalke. With Draxler still out injured alot of pressure fell on the shoulders of Klaas Jan Huntelaar but the big dutch striker got himself sent off on Saturday and therefore will miss this game through suspension. Schalke really can not afford to be without the dutch man and Roberto Di Mateo will probably go with Choupo Moting up front on his own. Defensively Schalke have really improved under Di Mateo and although this will be the biggest test of the year for Schalke I think they maybe able to rise to it.
I have searched for some value across the markets here and I am going to take Schalke +1 on the first half handicap, given the price is 8/5 this gives us some value and is a bet worth taking. Schalke have looked good defensively and this will be a battle for Di Mateo's men but I think they hold on for the first half and I'm going to take them to do so.
