Reading boss Steve Clarke has a real puzzle to solve in the midweek Championship clash versus Brighton. Their side faced the giant-killer Bradford in the FA Cup during the weekend where their center-half Alex Pearce suffered a broken nose. However, Christ Gunter and McClearly were rested at the FA Cup tie which could see them return to action on Wednesday. Baldock will also be out for Steve Clarke after suffering a season ending knee injury and will be replaced by Kazenga LuaLua.
Reading’s performance this season has been somewhat contradictory. While they still prevail in the FA Cup where they will play Bradford in the return fixture the 16th of March, they sit 18th in the Championship where they have been nothing but disappointing.
It is for this reason that Clarke has stated, “We want the same resolve and desire on Tuesday night.” Following Reading’s showing in the FA Cup. However, Brighton are unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions, but the head to head proves that Reading does genuinely have a chance to snatch the win and establish their FA Cup form into the Championship.
Nevertheless, if Championship is any indicator of the outcome of this tie we should definitely back Brighton.
For this reason, I will take a more neutral standpoint and recommend both teams to score for this match, as Reading must be very motivated from the FA Cup in th weekend, along with having some key players return to the starting XI. Playing at home should also create an immense atmosphere following the weekend result. However, in terms of consistency and current league status, logic makes us back Brighton and I believe they will be able to snatch a goal in what will be a game of contrasting runs of form.
