Cameroon and Ecuador meet Monday night in their opening round of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Cameroon hopes to turn some heads as it competes in its first Women’s World Cup. Cameroon is a team that relies heavily on its defense which is carried by goalie Annette Ngo Ndom, who was the best goalkeeper last year in the African championship. Offensively, Cameroon is led by Madeleine Ngono, who is the only player with more than 13 national goals. Youngster Raissa Feudjio is the X-factor for this team on the offensive end. Also, while this is the first World Cup for this squad, Cameroon did hold its own in the London Olympics, providing valuable experience that should carry over to this tournament. It’s just a question whether Cameroon has enough offense to really make a run making it out of its group.

Ecuador is another team competing in its first Women’s World Cup and looking to make a statement. Ecuador is a passive team that’s not going to do a lot offensively, relying on its defense and slower style to create chances. Ecuador goes by the slogan 'nothing will stop us' and plays hard under its young coach, Vanessa Arauz. Carina Caicedo and Ámbar Torres are the players who will have to step up for Ecuador offensively. Ingrid Rodriguez is Ecuador's lightning rod and should set the tempo on both sides of the ball. Ecuador is going to give it everything it has this tournament and never gives up, but you question if there’s enough firepower to do much in its first World Cup appearance. Expect there to be a lot of low scoring matches involving Ecuador.
These teams are a little similar in the fact that neither is all that great offensively and rather sit back and play not to lose.
While the plus money with an Ecuador team that plays extremely hard is intriguing, I see a low scoring match, and I’m calling a draw.
