Japan and Switzerland meet Monday night in their opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Japan heads into this tournament confident after winning the 2011 World Cup and fresh off its first Asian Cup. Japan is a technical team that relies on a high football IQ and a short passing game. Japan is an experienced team that’s seen it all and isn’t going to beat itself in this tournament. Homare Sawa returns after winning the Golden Shoe in 2011, and Yuki Ogimi adds depth on the offensive end. Japan is deep, moves the ball well and makes the right passes to get a quality look. The concern for Japan is how this team responds with higher expectations this season as the defending champ. Japan has also had trouble in the past dealing with physical and more athletic opponents.

2015 FIFA Women's World Cup: Japan vs. Switzerland Pick, Odds, Prediction - 6/8/15

Switzerland looks to make an impact in its first Women’s World Cup appearance. Switzerland may be new to this stage but has experienced players and a coach in Martina Voss-Tecklenburg who has been in countless big matches. Switzerland is a team that moves the ball well and is rarely held without a goal. Lara Dickenmann, Ramona Bachmann and Martina Moser are all threats on the offensive end and will carry the team as far as it can go. Caroline Abbe will set the tone defensively for this team. The main concern with Switzerland is a lack of depth and experience. While there are veterans to lean on, you have to question if that’ll be enough for Switzerland to advance.

Switzerland has the potential to play well in this tournament and put a scare in teams, but Japan is far more experienced and the deeper team. The odds in this match also make it reasonable to just back Japan in an outright win.

While I expect a compeitive match, I like Japan to win outright.
