The United States and Australia make their 2015 World Cup debut with a Monday night matchup.

The United States enter this tournament as the favorite to hoist the trophy. The United States is possibly the deepest team in the tournament and can kill you with many different players. Whether it’s Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan or Carli Lloyd, the Americans spread defenses out and make it difficult to focus on just one player. Defensively, the United States has an experienced and elite goalie in Hope Solo, who has been playing solid football since returning from her off-the-field suspension. The United States is the most talented team and is the overall favorite for many reasons. The only concern with the U.S. are the question marks in the midfield, as this team can be pushed at times once getting past the first line of defense.

2015 FIFA Women's World Cup: United States vs. Australia Pick, Odds, Prediction - 6/8/15

USA TODAY Sports

Australia reaches its sixth straight World Cup and returns a team that made the quarterfinals in 2011. Australia is an aggressive team that likes to push the pace and is filled with a lot of talented ball handlers. Lisa De Vanna, Michelle Heyman and Katrina Gorry are some of the players who can find the net and really put pressure on a defense. Australia is a fun team to watch and could once again be a surprise if its playmakers make plays. The athleticism and fitness for Australia gives this team a shot against anybody. The main concern with Australia as at goalie, as Lydia Williams has returned from a torn ACL less than a year ago and hasn’t quite faced the competition or skill level she’ll face in this tournament since returning.

This is an interesting opening match that will be fun to watch, as the Australians are no pushover. Australia won’t be intimidated, especially after making a deep run in 2011 when most of these players were barely in their 20s.

I still think America wins this match outright, but for the sake of the bet and the article, I’m going with the over. I think there’s going to be some fireworks in this opening match.

I have been viewing your picks the last few weeks for the French Open and recently the Women's World Cup and I have been very impressed by your success. I've been following a lot of your picks and have been doing very well as a result. I was wondering if you take like request or anything. What I mean is say I was interested on your thoughts on a random match in a smaller tennis tournament, could I somehow get your thoughts on said match. I'm not saying like a whole article or anything, just the blurbs you give at the end such as, "I look for Germany to win big," or "Sprinkling a little on Wawrinka ML." I mean these thoughts have proven invaluable.
