Ecuador and Switzerland meet Friday night in their second match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Ecuador is up there with Ivory Coast for the most embarrassing opening match, as it lost to Cameroon, 6-0. Ecuador was defenseless in the match, allowing 25 shots and 14 of those to be on goal despite controlling the ball 47 percent. As if that wasn’t bad enough for Ecuador, the team will also be without captain Ligia Moreira, who received a red card in the losing effort. Ecuador was simply not ready for its first ever World Cup match and had very little to zero positives to build upon heading into this contest. Ecuador isn’t a great offensive team and doesn’t have many playmakers besides Ambar Torres. So, while the defensive effort was brutal, Ecuador has to rely on that side of the ball in order to have a chance to pick up some points in this tournament.
Switzerland is coming off a frustrating 1-0 loss to Japan in its opening match. Switzerland controlled the ball 55 percent of the match and got 13 shots off, three of which were on goal. Switzerland came into this tournament as an offensive team that wants to be aggressive, but simply couldn’t get going and frustration boiled ever to 11 penalties and three yellow cards. Still, Lara Dickenmann and Ramona Bachmann are going to find the net eventually, especially Bachmann who could have easily scored two goals and changed the whole outlook for her country right now. However, this is still Switzerland’s first World Cup appearance, and doubt may start to set in if it doesn’t get off to a fast start in this match.
Boy, this match could get ugly, as Ecuador got blown out in its first match and is now facing a step up in competition without its captain. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Switzerland wins this match with its offensive firepower that should break out.
If Ecuador struggled with Ivory Coast, Switzerland could put up double-digit goals in this match. I'll take the over, as Switzerland could easily get over this number by itself.
