Manager: Gerardo Martino
Captain: Lionel Messi
Star Man: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
Young player to watch: Eric Lamela ( Tottenham Hotspur) Roberto Pererya (Juventus)
Key Player: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)
This is a riduculously deep squad and personally I am delighted that Martino did not make the same mistake as his predecessor and has included Carlos Tevez of Juventus in the squad. If Tevez was a part of the Argentina team in the World Cup last year I am 100% convinced they would have been crowned champions. With Tevez, Aguero (Manchester City), Lionel Messi (Barcelona) Lavezzi (PSG) and Higuain (Napoli) there is enough depth to cover if there are injuries like those sustained to Di Maria (Manchester United) and Aguero at the World Cup.
In fact this may be the best squad, on paper, that I have ever seen at international level, not only have Argentina got the best player on the planet in Lionel Messi but they have the one of the top scorer's in Italy (Tevez) and the top scorer in England (Aguero). Defensively Argentina have improved since the World Cup and with Rojo, Zabaleta, Otamendi and Garay they have a back four that will be very tough to break down, they will also play in front of a keeper that was superb at the World Cup and Sergio Romero will be hoping that another successful tournament here will get him a move to a big club in Europe, Manchester United could be a landing spot for the keeper with rumours David De Gea will be headed for Real Madrid.
While Lionel Messi is the captain in name the real leader of this team is vice captain Javier Mascherano ( Barcelona) the tough tackling no nonsense midfielder was brilliant in the World Cup, rallying the team in several games both verbally and physically. While Messi leads by example in the way he performs it is often Mascherano who does the talking in team huddles, before games and at halftime. Look for this to continue as Argentina have had a good amount of success with this formula. Alongside Mascherano in midfield will be Di Maria (Manchester United) probably Pastore ( PSG ) and possibly Erik Lamela of Tottenham who if given a chance could be in with a shout to be one fo the young players of the tournament.
This is as exciting a squad as I've had the privlege of seeing play and I am really looking forward to watching them at this Copa America. They are deserved favourites but the 9/4 is too short for me and I will be looking for value elsewhere on the overall.
Prediction: Finalist , I think they should make the final and then it could depend on whether they face host nation Chile or not as to whether I woud fancy them to get the win.
Favourite Bet: I am taking Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez to finish top scorers at 10/1 and 16/1 respectively. I think both present excellent value, much better than the 3/1 being offered about Lionel Messi.
