The Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders FC meet Wednesday night at PPL Park.
The Philadelphia Union look to break out of their funk after losing three of their last four matches. The Union struggle mightily on the defensive end, as they’ve allowed 30 goals in 17 matches, which includes three or more goals five times. The Union have played three different goalies and none have worked considering they’ve allowed seven goals in their last two matches. Offensively, C.J. Sapong leads the Union with five goals, Cristian Maidana has five assists and Fernando Aristeguieta has 32 shot attempts. The Philadelphia Union could still make a push in a wide open Eastern Conference, but it starts with matches like this. Aristeguieta, Conor Casey, Michael Lahoud and Steven Vitoria are questionable with injuries.
USA TODAY Sports
The Seattle Sounders FC look to build on their first place lead after winning three of their last five matches. The Seattle Sounders FC are an elite defensive team that’s allowed just 13 goals in 16 matches, as Stefan Frei has 59 saves and pitched eight shutouts. Offensively, the Sounders have scored three or more goals four times and five goals in their last four matches. Obafemi Martins leads Seattle with seven goals, Marco Pappa has five assists and Lamar Neagle has 23 shot attempts. The Seattle Sounders FC will play their first match without Clint Dempsey, who is suspended for the next three matches. Andrés Correa, Osvaldo Alonso and Chad Barrett are questionable with injuries.
The Philadelphia Union have not beaten the Seattle Sounders FC since October of 2011, as the last three matches have favored Seattle, 2-0-1. This may be the Union’s best chance without Dempsey, but I still don’t see it happening.
The Sounders are too solid at both ends of the field and should be able to pickup yet another victory.
