The second semi final in the Copa America will see Argentina take on Brazil's conquerors Peru in what should be an intriguing clash of two very different styles of play. Favourites for the competition Argentina needed penalties to get past Uruguay in the quarter final and they played the last thirty minutes against ten men after Edison Cavani was sent off. Led by captain Lionel Messi, the brilliant Barcelona forward has been a little out of sorts during this tournament. Messi is playing more of an orthodox number ten behind Aguero rather than the right side of a front three as he does at Barca, this has led to Messi being more isolates against the double team and the opposition has done well to close off the space and prevent him from having room to produce his usual magic. Sergio Aguero has been Argentina's key man though and the Manchester City striker was again their biggest threat and arguably their best player against Uruguay. Angel Di Maria has had another good tournament for Argentina and the Manchester United winger has provided width and pace down the wings which will be needed if Argentina are to break down a formidable Paraguay defence.
While Paraguay did also need penalties to get past Brazil in the last eight , the Paraguaians were by far the better team in the quarter final. In fact Brazil brought on a defensive midfielder as it looked like Paraguay were going to win it in normal time. Gonzalez was the one who held his nerve both in normal time when scoring the equaliser from the spot and in the penalty shoot out when converting the winning penalty and he was very impressive throughout the quarter final. Valdes and Roque Santa Cruz provided plenty of work rate up front but Gonzalez was the quality player for Paraguay and the Basel winger could well earn himself some attention from some of Europe's bigger clubs if he continues this impressive form.
This one is really tough to call but a couple of things stand out for me on the current prices, if this was an Argentina v Brazil semi final there is no way Argentina would be 2/5 favourites and Paraguay are every bit as good as Brazil all be it with more hard workers and less individual brilliance. The handicap is set at +2 and i'm going to take the underdogs on the handicap at worst I think we push here but I have a feeling that Paraguay may just take Argentina all the way to penalties in what should be a hard fought game.
