One of the marquee match ups in the last qualifying round will see Lazio take on Bayern Leverkusen over two legs with the first taking place in Rome on Tuesday night. Lazio having finished the season poorly ended up in the qualifying round and really could end up in the lower tier Europa League because of that poor finish to the season. Lazio though were terrific at times last season and with much the same team this year the Italians will be hoping that they can push through this tough fixture and make it to the Group Stages of the competition for the first time in eight years. Star man Felipe Anderson was linked with a move away in the summer but it has not materialised and Manager Piolo will be building his side around the talented winger with Klose and Dordevic the key men up front. If Lazio can get a good start here then anything is possible and I think this is a really solid team that at times last season looked exceptional.
Bayer Leverkusen have a good young side but they probably couldnt have picked a worse draw for themselves meeting Italian giants Lazio. Leverkusen have a strong midfield with Bender, Kiebling, Brandt and Kramer all forming a core that any club could build themselves around. This is a tough task though for Leverkusen who after a tough game this weekend against Hoffenheim head for Italy to face a Lazio team who have yet to play a game in Serie A. Bayer Leverkusen finished the season strong though and had a good pre season so they will be looking to push on to the Group Stages and if they can get avoid defeat in Rome they would be half way to that goal in my opinion.
This is such a tough game to call, the season for both clubs has not really gotten going with just one game in the Bundesliga and one round of the Coppa Italia in Italy. If we were a few games into their respective seasons it would be an easier thing to read but for me Lazio are a home dog here and I think they should be just slight favourites. Given the value involved I am going to have to take the Italians.
