Real Madrid open their Champions League campaign with a tough home game against Shakhtar Donetsk. There was talk of a crisis within Real Madrid as Cristiano Ronaldo had gone eight games without a goal for Club and country, he duly obliged with five at the weekend in one game. Ronaldo has now become the all time La Liga top scorer for Real Madrid, an incredible feat, passing Raul who scored 228 in 550 appearances. Ronaldo has now scored 230 in 204 games. That is the measure of how special Ronaldo is and Real Madrid and La Liga fans should take a moment to think about it and appreciate the sort of brilliance they are witnessing from the Portugese superstar. With a support cast of Bale, Benzema, Modric and Kroos there is not a one man show in Madrid but Ronaldo is definitely the jewel in the crown. Defensively Rafa Benitez side have looked better in their last two but struggled in some of the pre season games.
Shakhtar Donetsk are one of the best sides in Europe with a quality squad and led by brazilian midfielder/forward Alex Teixera who has nine goals in eight games this is a team that definitely has goals in them. Bernard and Eduardo will chip in a be the creative influences behind Teixera and if they can get on enough ball I think this side will cause Real Madrid problems. There is no doubt the loss of Adriano and Costa during the summer will have hurt Donetsk but they have started their season well and in the qualifying rounds of the Champions league they were very impressive.
I am taking the overs in this one, both teams scored in abundance at the weekend with Real Madrid netting six and Shakhtar netting five. I can see this one being an open free flowing game and to be honest I think Shakhar on the handicap here could be worth taking, the only thing stopping me is the firepower that Madrid possess, its very hard for teams to suppress Ronaldo and Bale if they go a couple of goals down and have to open up. I am taking the overs in what should be one of the games of the night in the UEFA Champions League.
