Roma opened their Champions League season with a terrific home draw against the Champions Barcelona, but then faltered last time out losing to Bate in a shocking 3-2 loss a game in which Roma went 3-0 down but fought back too late in the game. Roma now go to Germany looking for a result against a good Bayer Leverkusen team who gave Barcelona plenty to think about last time out and were unlucky to lose in Barcelona. The addition of Javier Hernandez in the off season was definitely a big addition as was the addition of Stefan Kiebling. Both players have struggled to find the net though but that will come over time as they are quality finishers. Bayer Leverkusen had a tough start to the season but have started to come good and have moved back up the bundesliga table.
Roma had themselves to blame for struggling early but they have put together some really solid form in Serie A and are now second in the league table just a point behind early leaders Fiorentina. Strong performances of late though have shown the quality in this Roma side and the big difference between this season and last is the current strength in depth. Roma added quality players with Dzeko, Falque, Szecny, Salah and Emerson all coming in and providing a depth that just was not there last season. Rudi Garcia realised the problem his team had last season had alot to do with their lack of squad depth and they have addressed it this year. For me this is a Roma team built to win the Serie A title a bonus for Roma fans is that this team also looks likely to compete in the Champions League.
This is one of the best match ups of the week in terms of ability, I think both teams here are really well matched and I cant really see much of a difference between the sides. Obviously Bayer playing at home in the BayArena does give the German side an advantage but that is reflected in the current prices. For me Roma look the play though on the handicap, I think Bayer are going to have a tough time beating Roma and while the Italians may not win outright I think they come away from this game with at least a draw.
