On Tuesday evening Zenit St Petersburg will travel to Portugal to take on Benfica in what should be a hotly contested game between two well matched teams. Zenit of course come into this game in the midst of Russia's mid season break. Zenit's last real competitive game was a loss to Gent in this competition but it was a game that meant nothing to Zenit as they had already won the group. Former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Andre Villa Boas has done a fabulous job in Russia with Zenit and will look to use star men Dyzuba, Hulk, Shatov, Witsel andDanny. This is a quality team that romped through what turned out to be a tough group with Valencia and Lyon both exiting the competition at the group stages. Zenit definitely are at a dis-advantage coming into this game from their winter break but I still like this team, they were impressive in the group phase and this team will be dangerous in this spot.
Benfica are one of the tough teams to play against, definitely strong across the middle with an impressive attack who are alittle over reliant on Jonas this side is one of the ones that can be excellent on their day and have a very strong home record. With Mitroglu and jonas up top they have a classy attack and young Brazilian Talisca is a much sought after midfield maestro. Benfica though are coming into this game off the back of a big home loss to Porto , a disappointing one that has left them second in the Portugese division with Sporting Lisbon taking advantage of that loss to go three points clear.
While I do think that Benfica just about deserve favouritism being at home here but I cant help but feel like this Zenit team are being a little bit overlooked. Zenit were very impressive in their group stages earlier this season, they won in Spain and in France against strong teams. I am a fan of Andre Villa Boas and I think he will have his team ready for this game, I fancy this team to pull off a shock here, while they might not win in Portugal I think they come away from this game with at least a draw. I am taking Zenit +1 on the handicap.
