The San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids open their season Sunday at the Avaya Stadium.
The San Jose Earthquakes hope for a bounce back season after missing the playoffs three straight seasons. Chris Wondolowski returns after leading San Jose with 16 goals, Matias Perez Garcia had seven assists and Quincy Amarikwa had 45 shots. Defensively, David Bingham returns at goalkeeper for San Jose after producing 12 shutouts and 105 saves. The San Jose Earthquakes are an impressive defensive team that will turn to that side of the ball again in hopes of having a winning season. The San Jose Earthquakes are 2-0-3 in their last five regular season games.

The Colorado Rapids also look for a bounce back season after winning just 17 games in their last two years. Kevin Doyle returns after leading Colorado with five goals, Dillon Powers had six assists and Luis Solignac had 26 shots. The Colorado Rapids have to get going offensively after scoring just 33 goals last season. Defensively, Zac MacMath will be the goalkeeper for Colorado, as he produced six saves in three games. The Colorado Rapids have lost four of their last five regular season road games.
Four of the last five meetings between these two teams have produced a draw. San Jose did beat Colorado in the last meeting in August, 1-0. Each of the last five meetings between these two teams have produced no more than two goals.
The San Jose Earthquakes are a fairly solid home team that was able to flex its muscle towards the end of the season. The Rapids aren’t exactly the best road team in the world. I’m going with the Earthquakes to get the big opening victory.
