The Seattle Sounders FC and Sporting Kansas City open their season Sunday night at the CenturyLink Field.
The Seattle Sounders FC have been the most consistent team in the MLS with a playoff appearance every year since 2009. However, Seattle will have some growing pains this year with key guys such as Obafemi Martins and Marco Pappa no longer on the roster. Clint Dempsey returns after picking up 10 goals for Seattle, Tyrone Mears had three assists and Brad Evans had one assist. Defensively, Stefan Frei returns as goalkeeper after pitching 10 shutouts and coming away with 111 saves. The Seattle Sounders FC allowed just 36 goals in 34 games. The Seattle Sounders FC have won four of their last five regular season home games.

The Sporting Kansas City have also been a force in the MLS with five straight playoff appearances. Sporting Kansas City looks to get back on track after getting bounced in the knockout stages in the last two seasons. Dom Dwyer returns after leading Kansas City with 12 goals, Benny Feilhaber had 15 assists and Graham Zusi had 28 shots. Defensively, Tim Melia returns at goalkeeper after pitching eight shutouts and producing 82 saves. The Sporting Kansas City was a solid defensive team a year ago, allowing 48 goals in 34 games. The Sporting Kansas City have lost three of their last four regular season road games.
Two of the last three meetings between these two teams has ended in a draw. Sporting Kansas City won the match in June. The Seattle Sounders FC have not beaten Kansas City since March of 2014. The last five matches have produced no more than two goals.
Both of these clubs are defensive minded, especially Seattle, who was one of the best defensive teams in the league last season. When you add the fact the Sounders are pretty tough at home, I like the home team to get the nod here.
