Rafa Benitez in Steve McLaren out? Can former Real Madrid boss save Magpies from relegation?

See the Latest Odds

Newcastle United are on the verge of appointing former Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez as their new manager after sacking Steve McLaren. Mclaren the former England boss took over Newcastle United in the summer and has spent €100million on players in the six months he has been in charge, the results - 6 wins in 28 league games , the worst offence in the league and the third worst defence. Simply not good enough at a club like Newcastle but the reality of whoever takes over the job is that they are not out of touch and survival is a realistic possibility.

Rafa Benitez is the favourite to be appointed at the moment and a man with credentials in the Premier League where he guided Chelsea to a top four finish and won the Champions League with Liverpool while keeping them competitive in the League. Benitez has not much experience with relegation strugglers though having managed Valencia to two Spanish League titles he then managed a who's who of top European clubs, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Napoli, Real Madrid and a brief stint at Chelsea thrown in for good measure. The good for Newcastle would be that Benitez knows the English game, he is good at setting his teams up to be tough to beat and Newcastle need points desperately.

Newcastle though have winnable game on their remaining schedule with  home games against :Sunderland , Swansea, Palace, Tottenham and Manchester City, the latter two are difficult fixtures hard to see Newcastle getting anything from them but the first three are all against teams they could and will need to beat. Away from home the Magpies face Leicester , Southampton, Norwich, Liverpool and Aston Villa. At least two of those Norwich and Villa are against teams in the bottom three and while the other three are very difficult they could take a point from at least two of them.

The question is can Benitez save them though? Ten games and a point from safety? If appointed I think Rafa will get Newcastle out of the relegation zone and this is a play we should take in a speciality market. Newcastle not to be relegated is available at 11/10 at bet365.
