The Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake meet Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The Colorado Rapids look to build on their Western Conference lead after a solid 5-2-2 start to the season. The Rapids rely on their defense that’s allowing an average of less than one goal per match and has allowed more than one goal just once this season. Offensively, the Colorado Rapids have four players with at least 14 shot attempts and two players with 10 shots on goal. Luis Solignac leads Colorado with three goals, Jermaine Jones has two assists and Shkëlzen Gashi has 25 shots. Defensively, Zac MacMath has come away with 20 saves on 30 shots faced. The Colorado Rapids have won five of their last eight home games.
USA TODAY Sports
Real Salt Lake can take the lead in the Western Conference after an impressive 5-1-2 start to the season. Real Salt Lake have found their groove offensively with four goals in their last two matches, and they have nine players with at least one goal this season. Real Salt Lake has been one of the more consistent teams in the MLS so far this season. Joao Plata leads Utah with four goals, Juan Manuel Martinez has two assists and Yura Movsisyan has 14 shots. Defensively, Nick Rimando has come away with 29 saves on 43 shots faced. Real Salt Lake have earned points in five of their last eight road matches.
Real Salt Lake is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings against Colorado, which includes a victory last month. The Rapids only victory over Real Salt Lake during that span was last July. Three of the last five meetings between these two clubs produced three or more goals.
This should be a hell of a matchup between the top two teams in the West. And while Real Salt Lake has had the upperhand over Colorado recently, the Rapids are 4-0 this season on their home field. I’ll side with Colorado at home here.
