Colombia and Paraguay square off Tuesday night in the Copa America at the Rose Bowl.
Colombia is coming off a 2-0 beat down over the United States and looks to take control of group A with another victory. Colombia was aggressive from the start and had an impressive seven shots on target despite controlling the ball for just 46 percent of the match. Colombia played a complete match from start to finish and proved that it's a sneaky contender in this tournament if it can play with the same energy. The concern with Colombia for this match is the fact James Rodriguez is questionable with an injury. Rodriguez is obviously the biggest playmaker for Colombia and scored the second goal in the opening match. Possibly losing him for this match would be huge. Still, Colombia is a dangerous team when clicking at both ends of the field.
USA TODAY Sports
Paraguay settled for a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica and hopes to bring another solid effort in this match. It was a very physical match for Paraguay, as it featured five yellow cards and one red card. At times you had to question if either team was focused on finding the back of the net or more concerned with bullying its opponent. Still, Paraguay was able to survive despite getting just one shot on target, which came from Bruno Valdez. Paraguay showed it can get the job done on the defensive end, especially with Justo Villar coming away with four saves, but it has to push the pace offensively a little more in this match. Dario Lezcano and Derlis Gonzalez have to lead the charge for this team if it's going to come away with a victory.
These teams don’t meet often, as the last match was in 2007, a match Paraguay won 5-0. Colombia’s last win over Paraguay came in 1987, which means there’s a three-match drought.
However, when it comes down to it, Colombia is by far the more explosive offensive club and should be able to put pressure on Paraguay with or without Rodriguez on the field.
I like Colombia to get the victory and take control of its group.
