The UEFA Euro 2016 championship in France kicks off on Friday afternoon as the host nation looks to live up to expectations in their first match against Romania.
Les Bleus head into this tournament as the odds on favoirites to win the whole thing as they and Germany sit atop the poll made by the odds makers and while part of that has to do with France’s track record playing on home soil, but they are also one of the very best teams in the world. France is loaded up front with the likes of Olivier Giroud, Antoine Greizmann, Kingley Coman, and Anthony Marital leading the charge but the fire power doesn’t stop there as they are well balanced in the mid field led by the face of the French side in Paul Pogba as well as a world class keeper in Hugo Lloris. France avoided any qualifying tournaments as right of the hosts of the tournament so they should have very fresh legs and while they are younger than past versions of the national side they have certainly made significant strides over the last eight years and will demonstrate in the group stage why they are favoured to win the tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Romania returns to the European spotlight by qualifying for the 24 team continental championship but they didn’t get a very favourable draw as they start off against France in a game they are virtually given no chance to compete in. The Romanians have been playing quite well of late as they have shown up against some of the world’s best sides in international friendlies and obviously did well enough in qualification to get to the final stahe of the tournament but this is just a tough matchup for them to start things off. Luckily for them though they are in a pool with Switzerland and Albania and should have a great shot at being runners up or even qualify as a third place wild card. Romania will look to park the bus despite having some decent options up top in the form of Popa and Stanciu but with the depth and fire power of the hosts I think this game gets out of hand as France cruises to a multi goal win to start the tournament.
