The United States and Paraguay play Saturday night in the Copa America at Lincoln Financial Field.
The United States looked far more inspired in its 4-0 victory over Costa Rica and started the match with far more energy than its 0-2 loss to Colombia. Clint Dempsey was the star of the show as he scored the opening goal and had two assists, while Jermaine Jones had one goal on two shot attempts. USA scored on four of its five shots on target and only controlled the ball for 40.8 percent of the match. The United States can now advance to the quarterfinals with another victory and have shown what it's capable of when it actually wants to play motivated soccer. Of course we’re not sure which team will show up this time, but there’s really no more excuses for coach Jurgen Klinsmann and his club.
USA TODAY Sports
Paraguay really hurt its hopes of advancing after losing to Colombia, 2-1. Despite being outclassed in talent, Paraguay played well for much of the match, as it controlled the ball 56.5 percent of the time and got 10 shot attempts. Víctor Ayala scored the lone goal for Paraguay and Celso Ortiz had one of the four shots on goal. Overall, however, Paraguay just couldn’t overcome Colombia’s pressure offense and had to play a lot of the second half undermanned due to Oscar Romero receiving a red card. Paraguay has now shown that it’s a team that’s not going to lay down and has been rather consistent in both of its matches this tournament. If Paraguay can get off to a fast start, there’s potential for an upset here.
If the United States team that showed up Tuesday night shows up for this match, another victory is in the cards for the home team. If it’s another lackluster start, Paraguay could end up winning this match outright. Overall, USA is the more talented team here and will have another huge home crowd advantage this time in Philadelphia.
You have to expect the United States comes out guns blazing again and gets the victory to prevent any chance of getting bounced.
