Venezuela and Mexico meet early Monday night in the 2016 Copa America at NRG Stadium.
Venezuela already advanced to the quarterfinals with 1-0 victories over Jamaica and Uruguay. Venezuela has relied on its defense to earn the points, as it’s pitched back-to-back shutouts and allowed just four total shots on target. In its win over Uruguay, Venezuela controlled the ball for just 38.8 percent of the match and still allowed just one goal on target. Offensively, Josef Martinez and Salomon Rondon are the two players who have found the back of the net for Venezuela. You have no choice but to be impressed with Venezuela so far, as the defense has been up to par while the offense has managed to produce 26 total shots in two matches. Venezuela has now allowed just three goals in its last five matches overall.

Mexico also enters this match with a 2-0 record and has advanced from the group stages for the first time since 2007. In its victories, Mexico has outscored its opponents 5-1 and is coming off a 2-0 victory over Jamaica. In both wins, Mexico has controlled the ball for much of the match while managing to produce 37 shots total and 12 shots on target. Mexico is getting production from just about everybody on the team, while the defense has made it tough to find clean looks, as its allowed just six shots on target so far this tournament. Overall, Mexico has allowed one or less goals in its last seven matches. Mexico entered Copa America as the sneaky team to watch, and so far it's living up to those expectations.
These clubs have been very impressive through its first two matches, but I don’t think any team has looked as sharp as Mexico. El Tri has been stifling defensively while the offense has been aggressive and continues to get good looks. It’s hard to bet against mexico in its current form.
I’m siding with Mexico to sweep the group stages.
