Wales and Northern Ireland meet up in a knockout stage show down in France on Saturday in what is an all United Kingdom matchup.
Wales head into the knockout stage as winners of their group thanks to a victory over Russia in their final group stage match and got some help from Slovakia who played to a draw with England that ultimately gave the Welsh an historic performance. Wales has a lot of their success to credit to Gareth Bale who has been remarkable in this tournament and has scored in all three of their round robin fixtures and if they’re going to go on a run into the knockout stage they will need him to continue to produce as he and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey are their two best options offensively. Wales caught a huge break as they will take on a pretty underwhelming Northern Ireland side that lost two of their three group stage matches but did enough to sneak in as a wild card team but they get a Welsh side playing at an all time high and will be playing with a ton of confidence.
Northern Ireland meanwhile can thank a victory over Ukraine for their qualification into the round of 16 as they lost to both Germany and Poland but snuck in as a wild card team as one of four third place teams left in the draw. The Northern Irish haven’t bee overly impressive and head into this game as underdogs and rightfully so as Wales has been playing very well and came out of a group that featured England, Slovakia, and Russia which is not an easy mark by any stretch. This is going to be a tough matchup for Northern Ireland as they don’t have a ton of weapons in the offensive third and they will need to be sharp up there as Wales has a ton of options the other way and I think they will get out to an early lead and not look back in one of the better values on the board in these round of 16 fixtures.
