Poland and Switzerland kick off the round of 16 on Saturday morning in France as both sides look for a monumental victory and advance into the quarter finals.
Poland head into the knockout stage as runners up in their group behind Germany and drew the second seeded Swiss in Group A who finished behind the hosts from France in what should be one of the more exciting matchups on knockout day one. Poland hasn’t been able to get rolling in the offensive zone in this tournament but they have yet to concede a goal and that will be their forte against a Swiss side that has struggled through three games but did enough to get into the round of 16 with a big draw against France in their final game. If the Poles are going to emerge into the quarter final they need to get Robert Lewandowski on the score sheet as he has yet to make an impact and if he stays quiet it could be a premature exit for one of the more impressive teams in Euro qualifying.
Switzerland meanwhile has to be happy with the draw they got coming out of group A and after a respectable result against a French side that had already locked up the group they avoided a cross over with one of the high end teams in the bracket and have a good matchup with Poland. The Swiss need to get the ball onto the foot of Xherdan Shaqiri if they’re going to solve the Polish fortress and while he is more than capable of putting the team on his back we have yet to see a very solid, complete team effort from the Swiss so far as their matchups against Albania and Romania were not a very good litmus test. Switzerland is capable of getting it done but in the end this one will come down to a game breaker and the best option on either side is the Bayern Munich man in Lewandowski and when he is needed most I think he shines through and gets Poland into the quarters.
