Probably the tie of the last 16 will see Italy take on two time defending Champions Spain in what should be an enthralling encounter. While Italy came into this tournament as outsiders they have performed like the seasoned pros they are. This is an experienced squad led by a terrific captain and goalkeeper Buffon. Questions have been asked of Conte's forward choices but Pelle; El Sharawaay, Giacherinni, Eder and Zaza were the best available. This is an Italy team that is very strong defensively and they have some quality in midfield that can win games for them. In the biggest game of their group the Italians were brilliant on the counter attack against Belgium and scored twice ing he counter, this is an exact copy of the game plan they will use on Monday against the possession heavy Spanish.
Spain boss Del Bosque has not brought Spain's best attacking options with Torres and Diego Costa both left at home along with Juan Mata who was terrific for Manchester United this season. Spain will dominate possession but Iniesra has lost a half a yard of pace, Fabregas is not a centre forward and Morata is just not a clinical finisher. The former Juventus striker scored just seven goals last season why he is the number 1 starter for Spain is beyond me. Defensively Spain will be strong though and with Ramos and Pique this is a tough team to break down.
This game looks like one that could be decided by the slimmest of margins. Getting a goal head start with the defensively excellent Italy looks the smartest play to me. I will be taking Italy +1 in a game I feel like could go all the way to penalties.
