Ernests Gulbis vs. Novak Djokovic 2014 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

2014 French Open: Saturday, June 7, 2014 (Stade Roland Garros)

The Line: Novak Djokovic See the Latest Odds

Ernests Gulbis will look to continue his improbable run in the 2014 French Open when he faces Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Gulbis followed up his victory over Rodger Federer with a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Gulbis has won 15 of 18 sets in this tournament and is quickly showing the tennis world that he is a 25-year-old who means business. Gulbis is usually gone in the third round or earlier in Grand Slams, and this is the furthest he’s ever reached in a Grand Slam event. He did however reach the quarterfinals of the 2008 French Open. Gulbis is a tall player with an extremely powwrrful serve, and he’s really limited his errors in this tournament, particularly in his victory over Berdych.

Ernests Gulbis vs. Novak Djokovic 2014 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

There’s not much you can say about Djokovic, as he’s only lost one set in his first five matches. Despite needing a couple of tiebreakers to defeat Milos Raonic, there was never a doubt that Djokovic was in complete control of the match, and he won with ease. Djokovic has now reached at least the semifinal of the French Open for the fourth straight year and is looking to return to his second French Open final of his career. Djokovic is playing exactly how you would expect this time of year, somebody who doesn’t make a lot of errors and makes tough shots look easy.

These two players have met five times in the past and Djokovic leads the all-time series, 4-1. Gulbis’ only victory over Djokovic came in the 2009 Brisbane Draw. However, history may not mean much in this match considering four of the five times they played were on hard surfaces, and they haven’t met since 2001. Gublis is a much better and more experienced player than he was back then.

If Raonic’s serve gave Djokovic trouble, Gublis could have a punchers chance to continue this magical run. While I don’t think the youngster is going to beat Djokovic, I do think he can hang around and make this an interesting match. After all, he’s already defeated two quality tennis players in the last few days.

Give me Gublis and the points.
