Gilles Muller vs. Roger Federer 2014 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

2014 Wimbledon: Thursday, June 26, 2014 (London)

The Line: Roger Federer See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Gilles Muller and Roger Federer will meet in the second round of the Wimbledon on Thursday.

Muller won his first round match with rather ease, knocking out Julien Benneteau in straight sets and advancing to the second round of the Wimbledon for the fourth time in his career. Muller has had very little success in Grand Slams, as his furthest he’s ever reached was the quarterfinals in the 2008 US Open. Muller does have an overall losing record in his career, but including his victory in Wimbledon doubles, he has won eight of his last nine matches. Muller is the most successful player in the history of Luxembourg, and has a strong forehand that allows him to be aggressive.

Federer played only 23 games in his effortless victory over Paolo Lorenzi in the first round. It was the quick and painless victory Federer needed if he hopes to make a deep run in this tournament. As he gets older, he can’t have these dragged out matches if he’s ever going to have another shot at another Grand Slam title. Federer has now not lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since his exit in the 2003 French Open. He’s also been bounced just once from the second round in his last 42 Grand Slam events.

These players have played three times before, and Federer has won all seven sets. Their most recent match was in the 2008 US Open, a match that took two tiebreaks, but Federer pulled it out in the end in straight sets. This will be the first time the two have played on grass, as the previous three matches were played on hard surface.

As I mentioned before, Federer isn’t looking to play around in these early matches. While Muller is probably playing better tennis since the two squared off in the past, you have to like Federer winning in three sets and covering the spread.
